Crystal Grace Starts Build at Fincantieri in Italy

May 28, 2026 3 min read

Crystal has taken its next new ocean ship from planning into production, marking the ceremonial steel cutting for Crystal Grace at Fincantieri’s Marghera, Italy shipyard and setting a clearer timetable for the luxury line’s fleet expansion.

According to Crystal’s official announcement, the milestone marks the official start of construction for the ship, which is scheduled for delivery in May 2028. Crystal Grace is planned to enter service shortly afterward, with an inaugural voyage on June 11, 2028: an eight-night sailing from Civitavecchia, the port for Rome, to Fusina, the gateway for Venice.

Construction begins in Marghera

Steel cutting is one of the first major production milestones in a cruise ship’s build cycle, and for Crystal it moves Grace from concept into the shipyard phase. The ceremony took place at Fincantieri’s Marghera yard, continuing Crystal’s relationship with the Italian shipbuilder.

Cristina Levis, CEO of AKTG, said Crystal is focused on ships that are “deeply rooted in Crystal’s heritage and unmistakably modern,” adding that Crystal Grace is intended to bring together space, service and experience in a way that feels “intuitive and extraordinary.”

Fincantieri also framed the steel cutting as a relationship milestone. Luigi Matarazzo, general manager of the merchant ships division at Fincantieri, called it “a moment of great pride” and cited the shipbuilder’s partnership with Crystal and the Lefebvre family.

Why this matters for Crystal

For Crystal, Grace is more than another future ship on an orderbook. It is the next visible step in the brand’s post-2022 rebuild under A&K Travel Group, which acquired the Crystal brand and its two vessels, Crystal Serenity and Crystal Symphony. Crystal’s existing ships returned with a reported $170 million refurbishment, and the brand has positioned itself around high-touch service, spacious design and destination-led travel.

Crystal Grace extends that strategy into newbuild territory. The company describes the ship as a next-generation ocean vessel designed to build on Crystal’s service legacy while introducing a more contemporary expression of luxury at sea.

For the luxury cruise market, the significance is straightforward: Crystal now has a dated construction milestone, a delivery target and a named inaugural voyage for its next ocean ship. That gives past guests, travel advisors and luxury cruise shoppers a more concrete timeline for the brand’s growth.

What Crystal says Grace will offer

Crystal has not released every onboard detail, but the line has outlined several guest-facing priorities for the ship. Crystal Grace is expected to feature:

  • Expansive suites, including what Crystal calls the brand’s first-ever Owner’s suite.
  • Culinary concepts tied to partners including Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, Massimiliano Alajmo, Raffaele Alajmo and Riccardo Girardi.
  • Broadway-style entertainment, continuing Crystal’s emphasis on production value at sea.
  • Luxury-segment staff-to-guest and space-to-guest ratios, according to the line.
  • Curated itineraries designed to connect guests more deeply with destinations.

Those elements align with Crystal’s current positioning: larger updated suites, elevated dining partnerships, wellness and entertainment, and a service model built around a high crew presence.

First voyage: Rome to Venice

Crystal Grace’s first scheduled cruise is an eight-night itinerary departing June 11, 2028 from Civitavecchia (Rome) and ending in Fusina (Venice).

That routing gives the ship a Mediterranean debut with two high-recognition Italian embarkation and disembarkation points. It also gives luxury cruisers a specific planning anchor nearly two years ahead of delivery, particularly for travelers who prefer inaugural sailings or want early access to a new ship’s first season.

Crystal said bookings for Crystal Grace voyages can be made through travel advisors, its website or by phone.

What to watch next

The steel cutting confirms that construction has officially begun, but key consumer details are still to come. The next items to watch will be how Crystal reveals the ship’s suite categories, dining venues, entertainment program and full itinerary lineup as the May 2028 delivery window approaches.

For now, the headline is the build start itself: Crystal Grace is officially under construction at Fincantieri, with a delivery target, a first sailing date and a stated product direction that places the ship squarely in the luxury ocean segment. More details are available in Crystal’s press release.
